For the Chinese democracy movement, it's the biggest day of the year. For seven weeks in the spring of 1989, the pro-democracy uprising--led by Beijing college students--was in control of Tiananmen Square.

On June 3-4, 1989, Chinese troops of the oddly-named 'People's Liberation Army' shot their way into Beijing and retook Tiananmen Square, killing over 3,000 peaceful unarmed civilians in the process. It is famous as the "June 4" massacre.

On Feb 9, Chinese activist and writer Tan Zuoren was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of “inciting subversion of state power,” allegedly for his online comments regarding the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre.

Tan’s supporters say the charges were really aimed at silencing his investigation into corruption in the construction of school buildings in Sichuan.

A Chinese editor has been removed from his post after his newspaper exposed how shoddy handling of health vaccines by officials may have led to the deaths of four children and serious illnesses in at least 74 others, reports theage.com.au

The report created a stir across China, but within hours had been played down on websites and other media outlets following orders from the Propaganda Department.

The news from Tokyo on 10 April 2010 that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force had monitored ten Chinese warships passing 140km south of Okinawa through the Miyako Strait marked a new stage in China’s naval development.

The deployment was of unprecedented size and scope for the Chinese navy, and was the second such operation mounted by China in rapid succession: in March, a smaller flotilla had been deployed on exercises.

The Beijing Justice Bureau has suspended the practicing certificates of lawyers Tang Jitian and Liu Wei.
